ASPAN National Conference

The 2009 ASPAN National Conference took place April 19-23, 2009 in Washington D.C.  It was a busy and rewarding experience for all of us who attended.  There were many educational offerings geared for new and seasoned PeriAnesthesia Nurses, opportunities to network with colleagues from across the country involved in specialty practice groups, research, and management. The Representative Assembly met and approved clinical practice guidelines and position statements.  A group of very qualified and dynamic officers were elected to ASPAN's Board of Directors for 2009-2010.  See the Representative Assembly Report for more details on this important part of National Conference.

MOKAN PANA also conducted a General Membership Meeting during National Conference.  See the About Us Page for Meeting Minutes.

What Happened to the Newsletter?

Our newsletter editor has retired from office (Thanks to Lila for many excellent editions!) and we have not yet found a replacement.  For now we will be experimenting with using this website as our primary communication tool for members.  Please help us out by ensuring that we have your current e-mail address so we can let you know about updates to the website. If you, or someone you know, has any interest in working with our communication committee to publish a more traditional newsletter-please contact us.

 President's Blog

   President, MOKAN PANA

July 1 marks the beginning of a new year for MOKAN PANA and also the end of my tenure as President.

It has been a busy and productive year for our organization-thanks to the hard work of the dedicated volunteers who serve on the board of directors and education committee and also to the participation of you, our members!

Despite the economic downturn and decreased support from many of our employers for continuing nursing education, our membership has increased from 226 in the fall to 250 as of this month.  This is surely a testament to the dedication of perianesthesia nurses to continuing education and professional growth.

We held four successful seminars-one component conference, two district seminars, and one ASPAN sponsored seminar.  All were well attended and received great evaluations from participants.

For the second year, our component seminar featured best practice and research posters-an opportunity we hope to build upon next year.

We awarded scholarships for members to attend local and national conferences.  Seven members from district and component boards attended ASPAN's Component Development Institute in September-brining back some great ideas for growth and development of our organization.  We also awarded a scholarship to a nursing student to attend a seminar and donated a perianesthesia nursing textbook to Penn Valley Community College.

We awarded an Excellence in Clinical Practice Award.  The recipient of this award, Nancy Balke, and the activities of our component were profiled in the Kansas City Nursing News.

MOKAN PANA members participated in two community projects:  Care Packages for Marines and Light the Night.

We promoted PANAW week with goodies to a number of hospitals.

We redesigned our website making it more flexible and interactive.  It now allows better two way communication with our members throughout the region.

It has been my honor and pleasure to represent our membership this year.  You are the greatest!

Look for messages soon from your new president, Linda Buchmueller.  Linda is wise in the ways of perianesthesia nursing and will be a dynamic and creative leader- so stay tuned!

Thanks for a great year for our organization,

Carol Cooper, BSN, RN, CPAN
